Lofoten has always been this mythical place my family was from. My Grandmother loved telling stories of how it was growing up in the small town of Kabelvåg. So imagine my excitement when I not only got to visit Lofoten, but to do so on a RIB safari looking for sea eagles!
We disembarked the ship in Svolvær and headed down the dock to get geared up for the trip. Even in early autumn it was cold, and the suits we were wearing helped against the wind. We then headed to the small RIB boats and set out in search of eagles.
First, we sailed around admiring the ragged and impressive landscape – tall mountains go straight into the ocean and you can see the prettiest white sand beaches. The landscape here is like nothing else I’ve seen before.
Our guide threw some pieces of fish in the water to see if he could attract some sea eagles. Two of them did appear, but they did not stay for long. So, we sailed a to a different place where there were more of them. I was in awe of these majestic birds, and even managed to get some decent photos of them.
After some time with the eagles, we sailed along the coast around Svolvær. We sailed past traditional fishing houses and boats – what has quickly become the symbol of Lofoten internationally. We also sailed past the wooden racks used to dry stockfish. At this point our guide handed out pieces of stockfish (dried fish) for everyone to try – it was so much fun watching everyones reactions!
We then barely made it back to the ship before it started pouring down. I had so much fun visiting this place I have heard so much about. And I most definitely visited in one of the coolest ways!
