Last autumn I took a quick trip to Miami for a public health course. Miami is one of my absolute favorite cities – and a place I’ve returned to ever since I was a toddler. The course took up most of my days, but I did spend the late afternoons and evening shopping and exploring.
I stayed at a hotel in downtown with an amazing view of the the cruise ships and a small harbor. There was a park right next to it, perfect for a quick walk along the water before heading out shopping. While traveling, one of my favorite things to do is to discover local grocery stores. I was working on my master thesis on wine in alternative packaging at the time, so I had to check out the local selection. I was amazed by how many varieties they had, and how pretty the cans were!
I’ve wanted to discover the Wynwood art district for the longest time. The area is famous for all the street art, smaller galleries and independent stores. I loved all of the bright and colorful murals, both inside the closed-off art district and the surrounding streets. Some of the galleries were also fantastic, and I was amazed by the creativity of the artists.
I did also spend an afternoon shopping in an open mall close to Miami beach. Unfortunately it was too windy to spend a lot of time at the beach itself, I did head down to put my feet in the water. A group of us also headed to South Beach in the evening to celebrate the completion of the course.
