When I was little I grew up in a small town just outside Oslo, with the fjord on one side and beautiful nature on the other. While I still have friends and family living there I have spent very little time there after I moved abroad. When growing up, there was this small mountain we had to hike up a few times every year with school – which I absolutely hated at the time. Well I decided that I was way overdue for another hike, and maybe I would get lucky and actually enjoy it this time around!

After picking up my friend who lives close to the mountain, we set off to find the beginning of the trail. This is when I realized how bad my memory actually is, as I had no idea where to go. We did come across a sign post, but as there are many trails in the area we did not see any arrows to the right one. My friend thought she knew where we were going, and we soon came upon a stream and a massive boulder I remember from childhood hikes. Finally we knew we were on the right trail.

While it only takes about an hour to hike to the top it is not the easiest hike. You walk through a thick forest with an uneven path and  you also have to walk over some rocks that can be very slippery. At one point you even have to cross an old rockslide, where you have to climb back up to the path. This being said, we met several families with small children on the way up, so it is still possible.

Getting to the top we were met with the most incredible view! As it was a beautiful and sunny day we decided to relax on the top for a bit and enjoy the sunshine and the view! I even tried to see how many of the buildings I could recognize from above – didn’t get very far tho… On the way back down we stopped by KIF hytta, a small cabin you can rent for various events – another place I’ve been quite a few times growing up.

I have to admit, I actually really enjoyed the hike. I think it might be because it was something I wanted to do this time around, not just something my teachers decided I had to do. The views are also spectacular – much better than I remember and absolutely makes the trip worthwhile. This is definitely not the last time i will do this hike!
