Hiking in Alaska<\/p><\/div>\n

In so many of the Alaskan ports nature is just a few blocks away from the town. I had wanted to go hiking for a while and after doing some research, I found out that Skagway would be the perfect place. There were several hikes of various lengths and difficulty levels. I decided on one of the \u201ceasier\u201d ones, what was described as a 2 hour hike up to the Lower Dewey Lake (It did actually take us a little bit longer).<\/p>\n

With brand new hiking boots, my camera and a friend for motivation I headed out to find the trail. The hike up to the lake itself is very steep and takes almost 30 minutes. The trail is filled with rocks and roots and can be tricky to walk. About half way through we were both exhausted and ready to give up, but we took smaller breaks and made it up to the lake.<\/p>\n

At the end of the lake we walked thorough this beautiful area with several streams. The silence of the forest and the rush of the water had such a calming effect, and it really reminded me how nice it is to be out in nature. We continued on the trail, hoping we would see the actual lake soon. Sure enough the next opening in the trees showed the lake surrounded by forest and snow covered mountains.<\/p>\n

As we walked on we kept finding gaps in the trees allowing for one pretty view of the lake after another. At one point we started hearing running water again and passed by another stream at the other end of the lake. Next to the stream there was a small beach and camp site with the best view of the lake. Here we stopped to rest and take tons of photos. The trail then continued along the water, on what had been railroads tracks.<\/p>\n

The trail along the other side of the lake went further into the forest. While it did not offer as impressive views as on the other side it had the nice calming effect of the forest. When we got to the trail bringing us back to town, we thought it would be an easy hike down. We weret proven wrong pretty fast when the steepness and rocks were almost as tricky walking down. Finally at the bottom of the trail we were exhausted, but proud that we had completed the hike!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
